Do you think 20’s plenty?
Published: Wednesday 20 October 2021
We want to hear your thoughts on reduced speed limits that were brought in during the pandemic.
An online survey is underway to help find out if people across South Lanarkshire think 20’s plenty or if lower mandatory speed limits introduced in some town centres and outside some of our schools should be reconsidered.
The Scottish Government launched their Spaces for People grant funding to help local authorities to introduce temporary measures to support social distancing and active travel messages during the pandemic, as well as providing an outside environment where this can take place.
Advisory 20mph speed limits were changed to mandatory 20mph speed limits at a number of schools as part of the Spaces for People programme.
Mandatory speed limits were also reduced from 30mph to 20mph on roads within six town centres Bothwell, Carluke, Lanark, Larkhall, Strathaven, and Uddingston.
It is widely recognised that reduced speed limits provide road safety benefits due to lower vehicle speed.
Currently the reduced speed limits are operating on Temporary Traffic Regulation Order and the council is keen to include community feedback and comments in considerations before progressing with proposals to introduce the lower limits on a permanent basis, and the potential expansion of reduced town and village speed limits in further locations.
The online survey is open now and you can have your say until its close on 31st October 2021.
Further project information is also available on the council website.
