New councillor elected

East Kilbride West has a new councillor after a by-election was held yesterday.
Labour candidate Kirsty Williams was elected in Ward 9 with 1,386 first preference votes. Conservative candidate Bill Dorrian had 904 first preferences and the SNP’s Robert Gillies had 778.
There were seven candidates in total and under the Single Transferable Vote electoral system used in local authority elections in Scotland, Councillor Williams was elected at the sixth stage.
Turnout was 25.7% in the by-election, which followed the resignation of former councillor Ali Salamati.
