Inspections to take place for some council properties
Published: Monday 9 October 2023

Tenants will probably have noticed Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) mentioned in recent news stories.
This is a national issue relating to a building material that was used mainly between the late 1950s and late 1990s, and there are concerns over some circumstances in which this product was used.
In line with other public agencies and private companies, South Lanarkshire Council has been carrying out checks for RAAC in its properties.
The council can provide reassurance to local tenants and residents on this issue. For a start, all local schools have been modernised or rebuilt in recent years and RAAC is not an issue in any school buildings.
As you would expect, the council has also prioritised work to check the safety of council homes in the area.
An initial analysis has been carried out to identify any house types that require further investigation. Following that, a programme of inspections is now underway. Where any house needs to be checked, inspectors will speak to tenants and explain what checks they are there to undertake.
They will leave them with further information on RAAC and what we are doing about it.
Please be reassured that the inspection process is likely to rule out the presence of RAAC, rather than confirm it. We will liaise directly with tenants of properties if further investigation and specialist advice is required.
