Special celebration for diamond couple
Published: Tuesday 11 June 2024
From their first meeting in a café, Cathie and John Gebbie knew they were destined to be with one another.
The diamond couple recently celebrated 60 years of married bliss, having first met at Danny’s café in Hamilton in 1962.
Married two years later, the couple lived in Larkhall before moving to Blantyre. They welcomed their son Stephen in 1972, with both saying how proud they are of him.
Cathie worked in the Philips factory with her sisters, and also worked in Hamilton Town Hotel as a chambermaid.
John worked in various jobs at Honeywells, Steelworks, Group 4 Security, as a Traffic Warden, and latterly a lollipop man at High Blantyre Primary School.
Cathie likes in her spare time to read, do jigsaws and likes to potter in the garden when weather allows and also enjoys knitting.
John likes horse racing and is also a keen football fan.
The couple also enjoy going for dinner locally and spending time with their family.
They have one granddaughter Abi who is 19 years old and is at university studying psychology.
Joining the couple to help them celebrate their anniversary was South Lanarkshire Depute Provost Bert Thomson, who presented the couple with flowers, a special bottle of whisky and a certificate on behalf of the council. And joining him was Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Lanarkshire Alexander Wilkie MBE, who also presented them with a certificate to mark their achievement.
