It’s nearly general election day
Published: Wednesday 3 July 2024

Polling stations across South Lanarkshire and the rest of the UK will open tomorrow at 7am for the 2024 General Election.
The vote count will begin at 10pm for the three local constituencies, which are East Kilbride and Strathaven, Hamilton and Clyde Valley, and Rutherglen, with the results expected in the early hours of Friday 5 July.
There have been reports of delays in the delivery of some postal votes across Scotland but the national Electoral Management Board has been assured by the Royal Mail that no postal votes remain to be delivered in Scotland.
If you believe you are a registered postal voter but have not received a postal vote pack you should be aware of the following:
- When applying for a postal vote it is possible a small number of people may have mistakenly instead registered or re-registered to vote in person. Please check the email receipt you will have received from the Electoral Registration Officer at that time.
- If you did make that mistake or for any other reason did not in fact apply for a postal vote, you can still vote in person at the polling place listed on the polling card you will have received.
- People who definitely did apply for a postal vote but have not received it can still have it cancelled and get a replacement voting pack. This can be done in person up to 5pm on Thursday 4 July at Council HQ, Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA. Please bring photo ID.
- Please be aware that postal votes cannot in any circumstances be replaced at polling stations themselves.
- Also, if you are a registered postal voter you will NOT be able to vote in person on polling day. Registered postal voters cannot legally be issued with emergency proxy votes.
If you do still have your postal vote pack please return it as soon as possible. Royal Mail has put in special arrangements so that any vote that is in their system up to the evening of 4 July will be collected and given to Returning Officer so they can be added to the count.
Postal votes can also be returned to any polling station in the constituency between 7am and 10pm on polling day or handed into Council HQ, Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA.
Anyone handing in a postal vote will have to fill in a short form but will not need to show ID. One person can hand in their own and up to five other people’s postal votes.
