Road safety brings young ambassadors all together

All Together for Road Safety was the theme at this year’s Junior Road Safety Officer Open Day.
And the message had certainly been heeded by Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) across South Lanarkshire with more than 170 of them gathering at the event.
The Open Day was held at Chatelherault Country Park and offered indoor and outdoor activities alongside information and materials, while a variety of organisations were on hand to discuss road safety with newly appointed JRSOs.
Councillor Davie McLachlan, Chair of the council’s Roads Safety Forum, said: “JRSOs have a very important role in helping to promote and raise road-safety awareness to everyone in their school and indeed to the wider community.
“All of our primary schools are encouraged to appoint two or three JRSOs, with a few having small groups or committees in place as an alternative, and I am delighted that we have 110 of our schools registered for the scheme for this academic year.
“This not only helps make life safer for so many people, but it is instilling vital practices and attitudes into a generation of young people who will carry that forward into their own adult life.”
At the Open Day, JRSOs were able to collect their JRSO packs and learn about campaigns such as safe parking and speed awareness.
They also spoke to representatives from organisations including Police Scotland, Safety Camera Unit West, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Living Streets and council officers from Traffic and Transportation, Environmental Health, Air Quality and Sustainable Development.
