Winter Awareness Week - planning ahead
Published: Wednesday 23 October 2024
We are halfway through our annual Winter Awareness Week - and today's spotlight is on journey planning.
Being organised in advance can make all the difference in adverse weather, prompting us to seek out the safest routes and modes of transport, or even to question: is this trip essential?
If you must drive, check the weather forecast and any current or predicted difficulties – remember the weather can change very quickly so make sure to follow or check:
- local radio or TV stations,
- the Met Office or the Met Office weather app
- local 24-hour forecast links posted on the @SLCRoads X feed (formerly twitter)
- Also @SouthLanCouncil @_Trafficscotland and @BbcTravelScot
In particular, listen for any severe weather warnings being issued by the Met Office.
Drivers should allow extra time for journeys, pack a snack and something to drink, and carry along necessary medication just in case of delays.
With many working from home more often, our winter travel advice is designed to be useful whether you are commuting or only getting out and about after the working day is done.
Net Zero Scotland also has lots of great advice on how to heat your home more efficiently if working remotely this winter.
