A club in Cambuslang has secured funding of nearly £10,000 to ensure outdoor bowling is more inclusive for young people.
Kirkhill Bowling Club applied to the Can Do Community Challenge Fund to help develop opportunities for young people to play outdoor bowls, reducing social isolation and encouraging physical activity.
The group received £9,486.68 in total from the Can Do Community Challenge Fund to not only promote the sport for younger people but also to improve the clubhouse’s energy efficiency to provide warmer premises.
Previous Ladies President Marilyn Smellie said: “The funding from the Can Do Community Challenge will allow us to achieve the two main aims we have for our club.
“We now have sets of bowls of a suitable size for children and young people from a wide range of local groups and primary schools to attend coaching sessions and get a taste of the kind of fun and exercise that outdoor bowls can provide. And our second aim is to now use some of the funding to improve the energy efficiency of our clubhouse and provide warm premises.”
Community organisations could apply to the council for grants of up to £10,000 to assist with revenue, capital funding, or a combination of both. Access to the fund has now closed.
Chair of the council’s Finance and Corporate Resources Committee, Councillor Lesley McDonald, said: “I am delighted that the Can Do Community Challenge Fund was able to support Kirkhill Bowling Club’s aims of making it a more inclusive venue for younger people whilst providing a more environmentally friendly facility for everyone taking part in this inclusive and accessible activity.”
