Charging for electric vehicles gets a boost
Published: Wednesday 6 November 2024
Funding has been secured to support the acceleration of new electric vehicle charge points.
South Lanarkshire Council is one of eight councils across the Glasgow City Region who will share in the £3.5 million which should see more than 3,000 additional charge points installed over the coming years.
These new charge points will be delivered by a private sector operator, appointed by the councils, and include a mixture of charging speeds, installed across the City Region.
South Lanarkshire Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “We know that electric vehicles can have a significant impact in reducing carbon emissions.
“I hope that an increase in charge points will encourage drivers to make the switch to electric, helping us on the way to make an impact on national climate targets.”
Over the coming months the eight councils will be working intensively to scope the shape of proposal that will go to the market, with the goal of enabling a comprehensive network of EV charging across the region.
This includes widening access to charge points for the thousands of people who live in flats and can’t charge at home, as well as providing charge points in areas that typically may not be attractive to the private sector, enabling a more just transition zero emission forms of transport.
