Improvement works for junctions in Hamilton
Published: Tuesday 7 January 2025
Four junctions are to be improved as part of the Hamilton Community Growth Area.
The main works are being phased to avoid disruption to the area as much as possible.
Off-site works will first of all take place at the junction of Gateside Street/Johnstone Road and introduce traffic signals. These works will take place from Monday 13 January and regular users of Gateside Street will be aware of signing advising of the works. Local businesses, shops and residencies have also been advised.
Later in 2025 a rolling programme of works will provide traffic signals at the Strathaven Road/Mill Road junction, the roundabouts at Wellhall Road/Hillhouse Road/Woodfoot Road will be enhanced and the junction of Woodfoot Road / Laighstonehall Road will also be altered.
Each phase of the works is anticipated to take two to three months each with completion expected to be in autumn/winter 2025.
Specific details of the works will be communicated before they begin.
External City Deal funding of approximately £4.2m is being used for these alterations.
The main works are being phased to avoid disruption to the area as much as possible and there will also be some advanced works at the other projects in the run-up to each phase being started. It is anticipated that temporary traffic signals will be in operation for much of the works, with the potential for road closures for some aspects of the works. This ensures that all road users and those undertaking the works are in a safe environment.
Colin Park, the council’s Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services, said: “Due to the nature of these works, temporary traffic management will be in place for the duration of each phase.
“Unfortunately delays and disruption are expected during these works, but every effort will be made to minimise it.
“On completion, these junctions it will be easier for pedestrians and drivers to use and allow these corridors to operate more efficiently.”
