Burnside’s Joyce celebrates special birthday
Published: Thursday 3 April 2025
A woman at the heart of the Burnside community has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Joyce Davies is well-known across the area, having been an active member of Burnside Community Council throughout the 1990s until the early 2000s.
She was also responsible for starting the Autumn Club - a seasonal fortnightly club held in Burnside Church for over 50s that organises various speakers and outings for its members and is still going strong 34 years after it was launched.
Joyce is also a member of the Burnside Women's Guild, attends weekly coffee mornings at Burnside Church and is a member of Croftfoot Parish Church.
Originally from a village in Nottinghamshire, England, Joyce married her Scottish husband Jim in 1946, and the couple moved to live in Glasgow. This was followed by a temporary move up to Aberdeen where Jim trained to be a teacher. They lived a happy life together until Jim's death in 1991.
Joyce has two daughters - Janet and Kate - alongside sons-in-law Jack and Jeff, grandchildren Graeme, Craig, Kirsty and Gareth and great-grandchildren Cerys and Ben.
A keen sportswoman, Joyce enjoyed playing tennis, badminton and bowls and loves shopping, always making sure her jewellery and scarves match her outfits.
Depute Provost Bert Thomson visited Joyce to wish her all the best and deliver flowers, a card and a certificate to mark her special day.
