Have your say on future of council buildings
Published: Tuesday 22 April 2025
Do you have an opinion on how the council runs our schools, community halls, offices, and other buildings?
You can now share it with us in a survey launched today, seeking views on our proposed 10-year Estate Strategy.
The consultation, which will run for the next six weeks, asks for opinions on how our varied premises can be operated to best meet community, climate, and financial needs in the decade to come.
Councillors on the Executive Committee agreed the approach at a recent meeting, as the authority seeks to create a smaller, higher quality and more energy-efficient core estate.
The plan is set against the backdrop of the mounting budgetary pressures facing all local authorities, along with the substantial cost of decarbonising buildings.
Councillors also agreed that informed, robust, and evidence-based planning – which includes periods of public consultation – is key to establishing the path of the strategy.
Craig Jardine, Head of Property and Estates, explained: “It’s important that we plan ahead to make sure the council is operating as effectively and efficiently as possible.
“When it comes to our buildings, this includes meeting the challenges posed by climate change including the Scottish Government’s legal target for Scotland to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
“While this might sound like a long time away, it’s crucial that we plan and act now to make sure that we not only take the time needed to protect and enhance our varied estate but that we ensure it remains fit for the needs and demands of our changing society."
The survey is open to all residents of South Lanarkshire and includes six key questions about the proposed strategy based on a list of possible criteria and categories included in the report approved by the Executive Committee last month.
A further report summarising the results and views expressed in the survey is expected to be submitted to the committee on 25 June.
