Are you affected by the RTS switch-off?
Published: Monday 2 June 2025
You might have already heard on the radio or tv about changes that are taking place to Radio Teleswitching Service (RTS) meters.
If your home relies on the RTS for heating and hot water, you’ll need to upgrade your meter to keep everything running smoothly.
The RTS signal is due to be switched off on Monday 30 June 2025, which means some meters and heating systems could stop working in the way that they should.
Home Energy Scotland’s switch-off guide explains what this means for you and what steps to take.
If you think you may have an RTS meter in your home, contact your electricity supplier who will be able to confirm for you and arrange for it to be replaced.
If your meter isn’t replaced, your heating could end up always on, never on, or turning on and off at unsuitable times for you.
For more details — including how to check if you have an RTS meter and what to do if your supplier can’t install a smart meter yet — check out Home Energy Scotland’s comprehensive guide.
