Improvement work will mean closure of A73 at Symington
Published: Tuesday 22 July 2025
Work to improve the A73 as it passes Symington will require the road to be closed for that stretch.
The A73 St John’s Kirk will be closed from its junction with the A72 to its junction with Burnhead Road from 7am on Monday, 28 July, for up to seven days to allow it to be resurfaced.
No motor vehicles (except those engaged in the work and emergency-service vehicles) will be able to park or drive on this section of the road during this time.
A signed diversion route will be in operation, from the A73, to the B7078, to the A70 and back to the A73, and vice-versa.
Colin Park, Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “This is important work to improve the road surface but, unfortunately, the affected section of the road needs to be closed to allow the work to be carried out, so there will inevitably be some disruption.
“In general, we ask that people avoid the area if possible during the works, and if they cannot manage to do so, that they leave extra time for their journey and plan their routes accordingly. During the works, the patience and understanding of all drivers would be much appreciated.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience, especially to local residents and businesses, but hope all road-users will recognise the improvements to the road once they are completed and that the long-term gain outweighs any short-term pain these works might create.”
