The Ministry of Defence has awarded the council the Gold Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) for its work in employing and supporting Reservists, service leavers, Veterans and their families.

The ERS encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same through pledging, demonstrating or advocating support to defence and the armed forces community, and aligning their values with the Armed Forces Covenant – a promise by the nation that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Councillor Mark Horsham, the council's Armed Forces and Veterans Champion, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the council has received this prestigious accolade.

“We already held the Silver Award, showing that our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant is long-standing. However, the fact that we aimed aim even higher – for the Gold Award – is testament to the regard we have for our employees who are serving, or have served, in the Armed Forces and to the level of support we want to, and do, give them.”

To win a Gold Award, organisations must provide 10 extra days’ paid leave for Reservists, and have supportive HR policies in place for Reservists, Veterans and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, as well as for the partners and families of those serving in the Armed Forces.

Councillor Lesley McDonald, Chair of Finance and Corporate Resources, said: “It is a large commitment by an organisation, but it is one that I am proud that South Lanarkshire Council embraces so fully and successfully. It is, quite simply, the right thing to do.

“Everyone who serves, now or in the past, in the Armed Forces deserves to be given our respect and support, and that is exactly what this council will continue to do for all of these people who work to maintain our safety and security.”

The UK Government’s Minister for Veterans and People, Al Carns said: “Employers are crucial partners in protecting our security and boosting the economy, and by backing current and past members of our Armed Forces to the extent that they receive a Gold Award, the council is building resilient communities and the sort of innovation that is needed for our nation’s defence. I congratulate them and thank them for their outstanding commitment.”
