Home Fire Safety Visits
Published: Wednesday 1 October 2025
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service runs a fire prevention initiative called the Home Fire Safety Visit.
It aims to prevent fires in the homes of people who are at higher risk of a house fire occurring.
Households can be at higher risk for many reasons, including health issues such as dementia, having experienced a home fire in the past, and lifestyle factors such as smoking.
The Fire Service is changing how they operate this initiative, which has led to some changes in their assessment and referral processes.
The council has a legal duty of care to anyone living in one of its houses, as well as to visitors or neighbours. If we assess your household is at a higher risk of a fire occurring we will refer you to the Fire Service. They will arrange a visit to complete a Home Fire Safety Visit to make sure you are properly informed about steps you can take to reduce fires and what to do if there was a fire in your home.
This will mean that we need to pass on your personal information. When we are ready to take part in this new process, we will publish information about the process on our website and will include information about your rights over your personal information.
No personal information you disclose during the assessment will be retained or passed by Housing Services if your household is not at higher risk of a house fire.
You can find out more about the Home Fire Safety Initiative on their website.
