A little planning makes a big difference for winter travel
Published: Wednesday 5 November 2025
Day Three of Winter Awareness Week sees us focusing on the importance of planning ahead.
Whatever the reason, there will be times when we have to travel during wintry weather, and we can help ourselves by thinking in advance about the different circumstances we may face along the way.
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “Spending a little time planning any journey can make a huge difference.
“As well as considering the safest route and mode of transport, you should also always consider if the journey is essential.
“If driving is the only option available, make sure you check the latest weather forecast as well as any current or predicted change in conditions.
“Also remember that weather changes can happen very quickly, so always make sure you are prepared.”
The following methods can be used to check the forecast:
- local radio or TV stations,
- the Met Office or the Met Office weather app
- In particular, listen for any severe weather warnings being issued by the Met Office.
Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys to allow for delays and ensure they take with them a snack, something to drink and any medication they might need.
One big change in recent years has been the number of people who are working from home more often, and in those cases our winter travel advice will be useful for getting out and about for their job, while Home Energy Scotland also has great advice on how to heat your home more efficiently and stay warm during the day when, in previous years, you may have been out at work.
