Flooding is the winter danger that’s frequently forgotten
Published: Thursday 6 November 2025
For the fourth day of our Winter Awareness Week, we are looking at another significant challenge – flooding.
Councillor Robert Brown, Chair of the Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “When we think of winter, most people immediately associate the season with snow, ice and low temperatures.
“Although it is of course important to be aware of the risks these conditions can cause, we can also face significant risks during this time from flooding as a result of severe rainfall.
“Whenever there is severe flooding, we work with colleagues in the police and fire services to assess the situation and, if it is necessary, we can co-ordinate reception centres and even arrange temporary accommodation if people need to be evacuated from their homes.”
If you have any concerns about flooding, you can contact your local roads office during working hours or, at any time, you can contact the council on 0800 24 20 24.
If you have any concerns about flooding, you can get in touch with the roads and transportation team during office hours or, at any time, you can contact the council on 0800 24 20 24.
Flood alerts are provided by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), who also work with police and councils to identify flood risks.
Other agencies are also involved in flood risk management dealing with floods as they happen, and the Scottish Government sets policies at national level.
A community-based organisation, the Scottish Flood Forum, supports and represents those at risk of flooding.
Further advice and support on flooding is available from the council’s flooding advice and support pages.
