More council homes on the way in Hamilton
Published: Tuesday 2 December 2025
Work has started on a mixture of 24 new council homes and flats in Burnbank, Hamilton.
A total of 15 two-bedroom flats, three one-bedroom flats, four two-bedroom mid-terraced houses and two two-bedroom end-terrace houses will be built on the site of the former St Cuthbert’s Church in Reid Street, Hamilton.
The new homes are being constructed to accommodate a range of housing needs for the area, with designs and features suitable for older people and those with mobility issues, as well as a proportion for those with general needs.
The new homes are funded jointly by the council and Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme.
Chair of the council’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee, Councillor Davie McLachlan, was joined by council officials and representatives from the council’s contactor, The JR Group, to mark the start of work.
Councillor McLachlan said: “I’m delighted that we are once again delivering on improving the availability of high-quality social housing across South Lanarkshire.
“This mixture of housing will be a welcome addition to the council’s housing stock in this area, adding to the 24 new council homes already under construction in nearby Backmuir Road.
“We are committed to providing a variety of social housing that meets the needs of local people, while maintaining affordability and value for money.”
Andrew Dallas, Projects Director for The JR Group said: “It is great to commence work at the Reid Street development in an effort to bring these quality, affordable homes to life alongside South Lanarkshire Council.
“This project, alongside the nearby Backmuir Road development, will add to the council’s housing stock, ensuring it can provide homes that meet the needs of the community and we look forward to handing them over to the council to welcome their new tenants in 2027.”
The homes are anticipated to be completed in early 2027, with work taking around 17 months to complete.
