Strathaven Academy’s Modern Languages Department has received a prestigious award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.
The British Council’s International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.
Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, enabling young people to gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work in today’s world.
The Modern Languages Department's international work included an International Languages Day Assembly featuring French and Spanish basketball players from The Caledonia Gladiators, DYW video calls with Ewan McTear (La Liga Content Creator), and a cultural exchange visit to San Ignacio de Loyola School in Madrid.
Head Teacher, Waheeda Huq, said: “Strathaven Academy’s International School Award marks our commitment to an international curriculum, preparing our young people for both academic achievement and global citizenship. This prestigious award is a testament to the dedication of Stefanie Baran, Dawn Allan, and the entire Modern Languages team.”
Chair of the council’s Education Resources Committee, Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, said: “Huge congratulations to everyone at Strathaven Academy for this award, it’s fantastic recognition for the work being done at the school. I am sure the pupils, and their parents, are delighted at the opportunities being presented to them.”
Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, said: “The school has earned this prestigious award through its inspirational international work and links with schools abroad."
Stefanie Baran, Faculty Head of Modern Languages and ESOL, and Dawn Allan, French/Spanish teacher, attended the ceremony, which took place in Westminster on Monday, 2 February and was hosted by Uma Kumaran MP on behalf of the British Council.
