Funding in place to enhance frontline staff

Almost £2 million is to be spent on enhanced ground maintenance and the reinstatement of a second hedge cut across South Lanarkshire.
An investment of £1.7 million will allow for the recruitment of additional frontline staff, which will result in more regular maintenance cycles, quicker response times, and greater attention to detail across parks, verges, and shared open spaces.
There will be increases to the council’s arboriculture team, town centre/high footfall area teams and the introduction of apprenticeships. Plans are now progressing for the recruitment of additional staff.
Executive Director of Community and Enterprise Resources, Kevin Carr, said: “This will help deliver cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environments, improving the visual appearance of neighbourhoods and contributing to local pride.
“The enhanced service will also support biodiversity, better manage seasonal growth, and help ensure that green spaces are accessible and enjoyable for all residents throughout the year.”
The reinstatement of an annual second hedge cut, funded through an investment of £144,000 per year, is expected to provide noticeable improvements to the look and feel of public areas.
Kevin Carr added: “The second cut will enhance visibility along footways and roads, supporting road safety and pedestrian confidence.
“It also prevents hedges from becoming overgrown, reducing obstructions, and ensuring that paths remain accessible.”
The investment is part of an almost £40 million funding boost after political groups came together to agree the Budget for People and Place in South Lanarkshire for 2026-27.
