Members needed for Education Appeals Committee
Published: Thursday 4 June 2026
Applications are being invited for anyone interested in becoming a voluntary member of the Education Appeals Committee.
The committee consists of two Elected Members (Chair and Depute Chair) and another member who could be parent(s) of children of school age, persons who have experience in education or persons who are acquainted with the educational conditions in South Lanarkshire (but not any person employed within the council’s Education Resources).
Appeal hearings are usually required when parents/carers wish to appeal the decision made to refuse the application lodged for their child for a placing request for school, early entry request for school or exclusion from school.
During the appeal hearing, representatives of the council’s Education Resources and the Parent(s)/Guardian of the child (appellant) will make their submissions. If the child is 16 or over, they would represent themselves.
Questions can then be asked by the committee members to the council’s Education Resources representative and the Parent(s)/Guardian of the child (appellant).
Thereafter the decision is reached by the committee members on whether the appeal should be upheld or is unsuccessful.
Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Resources, Jackie Taylor, said: “You are welcome to apply to become a member of the committee if you have an interest, meet the criteria and wish to act in the best interest of all parties.
“Subject to the approval of the council, volunteers who might be interested in joining a pool of Education Appeals Committee members and meet the requirements of the 1980 Act will be subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-appointment checks and training which will include a disclosure check.”
If you are interested, please email for an application form and further information.
