Could you help someone live more independently?
Published: Wednesday 23 September 2026
People across South Lanarkshire who want to make a positive difference through paid social care work are being invited to an event in Hamilton event next week.
Those attending can find out more about becoming a Personal Assistant, often known as PAs, who support people in their day-to-day lives so they can have more choice, independence and control.
The role can include helping someone at home, getting out and about, taking part in community life, or doing the things that matter to them.
It can be flexible, rewarding work for people who are reliable, caring and interested in supporting others. No formal qualifications are needed.
Anyone who would like to learn more can come along to the PA Awareness Lunchtime Event at Whitehill Neighbourhood Centre, Hamilton, on Tuesday, 29 September, from 11am to 1pm.
There will be information stalls and short speaker sessions at 11.15am and 12.15pm, so people can drop in at the time that suits them best.
Self-Directed Support Scotland, Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living, Personal Assistants Network Scotland and South Lanarkshire Council will be there to explain the role and answer questions.
Laura Arthur, Head of Social Care for South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Personal Assistants can make a real difference to someone’s everyday life.
“They help people do the things that matter to them — whether that is getting out and about, keeping a routine, staying connected with others, or having the right support at home.
“If you are caring, reliable and interested in supporting people in a practical way, please come along, find out more and see if becoming a PA could be right for you.”
