Poster highlights the need to switch off engines outside primary school
Published: Wednesday 30 September 2026
A primary school has come up with a hard-hitting poster to encourage drivers to turn their engines off every time they stop outside the school gates.
The winning entry from Woodside Primary School in Hamilton was prompted following complaints received from local residents regarding engine idling at drop off and pick up points.
Head Teacher Elaine Renwick said: “In response to the complaints from people living near to the school, we decided to run a poster competition, asking our Junior Road Safety officers to come up with a design.
“We were delighted with all the entries but decided to go with P7 JRSO Lacey’s entry which has now been added to the banner which has been placed on the railings outside the school.”
The poster competition move is part of an ongoing campaign by the council’s Environmental Services team which has been running an anti-engine idling campaign for several years with the "30 Good Reasons for switching off" lamp post banners displayed outside all schools on rotation.
It is hoped that the poster outside Woodside PS will highlight the need for parents and carers to switch off when parked to improve local air quality, particularly for young people whose lungs are still growing and developing.
Councillor Robert Brown, the Chair of the council's Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “To augment the campaign, schools from across South Lanarkshire have taken up the offer to run their own anti-engine idling poster competition.
“Climate Week is an ideal time to encourage everyone to back such small behavioural changes to help make the air we all breathe cleaner and healthier.
“Switching off your engine is a very easy way to make a small but significant positive impact, especially outside busy urban schools at drop off and pick up times.”
