Foster carers from across South Lanarkshire have been recognised by the Council for providing almost 150 years of fostering between them.
A long-service awards event celebrated the extraordinary contribution made by foster carers whose dedication in supporting generations of children and young people to feel safe, valued and loved has transformed lives and strengthened communities across South Lanarkshire.
Reflecting on what fostering has meant to her, Kathy Morrison, who was recognised for 25 years of service, said: “Every single foster child leaves a bit of themselves in your heart.”
Receiving awards for 10 years of service were Pamela and Brian Sheilds, and Bruce and Jackie McAllister, while Bruce and Tina Sharkey were recognised for 15 years of fostering.
Awards for 20 years of service were presented to Jim and Marie McNally, Vicki McCracken, and Margaret and Ian Keys, and joining Kathy in reaching the remarkable milestone of 25 years as foster carers were Ken Millard and Alice McPake.
The award winners were joined by colleagues, friends and members of the wider fostering community at a celebratory lunch held at South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters.
The event also welcomed Paul and Sam Richardson, who joined the fostering service in January this year and are at the beginning of their own fostering journey.
Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer of Health and Social Care for South Lanarkshire, who presented the long-service certificates, said: “The foster carers who have been recognised through these awards have made an extraordinary difference to the lives of children and young people across South Lanarkshire. What struck me most when speaking to those at the event was the dedication and compassion they continue to show.
“Their commitment, alongside the expertise of our social work staff and the dedication of our Fostering and Adoption Panel members, helps ensure children and young people receive the stability, care and support they need to thrive.
“The people we celebrated are a powerful reminder of the difference that individuals can make when they open their homes and hearts to a child, and I hope their example inspires others to consider fostering.”
