Registration for P1 pupils to take place in November
Published: Monday 12 October 2026
Parents of children who will begin their primary school journey in 2027 should be aware that the registration period is being brought forward.
In previous years, Primary One registration has taken place in January, but this year the registration window will be between 16 and 22 November 2026.
You should register your child if they will start Primary One in August 2027 and will be five years old between 1 March 2027 and 28 February 2028.
You will need your child’s full birth certificate and two recent official documents showing your permanent home address.
Full details of how to enrol your child can be found on the council website.
Chair of the council’s Education Resources Committee, Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, said: “I know that registering your child for school is a huge milestone for every parent.
“We want to ensure the process is as smooth as possible, and I would recommend people visit the website and familiarise themselves with what they need to do before the registration window opens next month.
“I would ask family and friends who are aware of a young person starting school next year to make sure the parents are aware of the changes to the registration period.
“I can’t wait to welcome our new intake of Primary One pupils across South Lanarkshire.”
If your child attends the nursery of your catchment school, please remember that they are not automatically transferred to Primary 1 – you still need to register them in the usual way.
Only the parent or carer the child normally lives with is authorised to register them. This includes guardians or anyone with legal parental responsibilities.
To begin, please use our school catchment area checker to find the correct catchment school for your permanent home address (both denominational and non-denominational) and start the registration process.
If you have difficulty, please email the Education Support Team.
